Have a Heart!

Valentine's Day is coming up fast, and if you're looking for something sweet to share with your sweetheart, stop by Local Roots Friday or Saturday for one of my hearts' delights:

--Espresso brownie hearts: fudgy and rich, with an extra drizzle of bittersweet chocolate for the die-hard chocolate lovers

--Honey cake: tempt your honey with this not-too-sweet cake loaded with spelt and buckwheat flours, buckwheat honey, and Lucky Penny Creamery chèvre

--Valentine date: if you love date bars, try this buttery rich little treat with local spelt flour, oats, butter, maple syrup, and maple sugar

--And if you are looking for something not so sweet, try an appetizer-for-two pizza on heart-shaped crusts.

Happy Valentine's Day!

At the Market February 9-12

Valentine's Day is coming up, which means that downtown Wooster's Chocolate Daze is happening this Friday and Saturday. Now, maybe you're like me and think Valentine's Day is a little overblown (because shouldn't you say "I love you" every day?), but there is always a good reason for chocolate!

Local Roots Market isn't officially participating in Chocolate Daze, but I'll be doing my best to hold up the chocolate standard. Look for some new treats this week!

--Baguettes (plain and garlic-herb)
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-basil, chèvre-rosemary, and Lock 21-peppercorn
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Mocha cinnamon rolls
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts (large and personal-size)
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Wheat rolls

I'm also planning to have a selection of small heart-shaped Valentine desserts -- details on that once I get them baked!

In the bakery case this week:

--Mocha cinnamon rolls: like regular cinnamon rolls, only not as sweet and with coffee and cocoa powder in the dough, bittersweet chocolate chips in the filling, and melted bittersweet chocolate drizzled on top
--Raspberry truffle torte: sheer decadence! Start with a dark chocolate shortbread base (infused with the flavor of black raspberries), a bit of melted bittersweet chocolate, raspberry jam, and finish with a rich brownie on top. You'll love it!
--Vegetable rolls: starting with greens-feta (with broccoli raab and spinach) Wednesday and Thursday and adding a savory kick to Chocolate Daze come Friday with sweet potato mole (homegrown sweet potatoes and Tiger Eye beans, tomatoes, onions, garlic, Southwestern spices, and unsweetened chocolate).

More sweet surprises to come!

New Treats for Woo's Brews!

I delivered fresh croissants (plain and almond) and scones (lemon-ginger and orange-mint-chip) to Woo's Brews earlier this week, but I had the feeling I might just get an urge to try something new. So today I'm delivering some sweet treats:

--Orange-walnut blondies: This is a new recipe for my repertoire, taking a simple brown-sugar blondie recipe and adding fresh orange juice and zest as well as walnuts. If these don't chase away the winter blues, what will?

--Cinnamon brownies: Maybe chocolate is more your speed. If so, these rich and densely chocolatey brownies laced liberally with cinnamon (inside and out!) might just warm your heart and your stomach.

--Espresso chip shortbread: Always a favorite at Local Roots, this buttery shortbread jazzed up with brewed coffee, bittersweet chocolate chips, and maple syrup is now also available at Woo's Brews.

Stop in and try something new!

At the Market 4/30 and 5/1

I spent last Friday at Lucky Penny Creamery in Kent, and though I hope to write up more about that another time, I mention it because you'll find Lucky Penny's chèvre and feta cheeses in more of my products this week:

--Sesame thins
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: four varieties -- dill-cheddar, chèvre-thyme, feta-oregano or Ludlow (creamy and caramelized like a 1-year-old Gouda) with fresh sage and tarragon
--Artisan baguettes
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix (two loaves with pecans; I ran out of walnuts!)
--Pumpernickel bread
--Whole wheat pita (in bags of four)

I'll be doing a breakfast cooking demonstration at Local Roots Saturday morning from 9 to 11 AM, and I'll showcase my whole wheat pita by making pita pizzas -- topped with scrambled eggs, local cheeses (like the Lucky Penny items), fresh greens, and maybe even some local salsa. Stop by and taste!

For the bakery case, I'm bringing in two new items:

--Peppermint brownies, densely chocolatey and cake-like, but with a refreshing bite of freshly picked homegrown peppermint. They're not overly sweet, so if you like your chocolate fix to focus on the intensity of the chocolate flavor, not the sugar, these are for you.

--Savory cheese palmiers, a twist on the classic French pastry that normally has sugar rolled into it. For the filling, I'm using a paste made from Lucky Penny feta cheese, olive oil, dried parsley, and freshly ground black pepper. I nibbled on a couple fresh from the oven this morning, and you'll be lucky to see any in the bakery case -- I'm hooked!

What will be on your plate this weekend?
