--Spicy Thai greens: It's been a while since I pulled out my favorite spicy Thai peanut sauce recipe for a vegetable roll, but last week, Kevin Leamer of Por-Bar Farms brought in loads of fresh greens -- spinach, arugula, and an Asian greens mix with tatsoi, mizuna, radishes, and pea shoots -- that begged to be added to this roll. Vegan as always!

Bon appetit!

At Local Roots March 23-26

Welcome Spring! I'm almost ready to get outside and start planting this year's garden with more good herbs and vegetables to use in baking, but I think I'll wait until after the rain...

Good things are growing in the kitchen these days, too. Last week saw the debut of spelt tea rings -- like rings of cinnamon rolls all joined together. Like most of my sweet baked goods, these are not too sweet, and while they're loaded with whole grain goodness, they're still light and tender. Look for them again this week, and I hope to introduce one or two other new items in the next couple of weeks.

But for this week, here's what I'll have on my shelves at Local Roots:

--Baguettes
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-basil, chèvre-rosemary, and Lock 21-peppercorn
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Dried tomato flatbread
--Garlic-herb bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Mocha cinnamon rolls
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Tea rings (some with pecans)
--Zaatar flatbread

In the bakery case, I'll have individual mocha cinnamon rolls -- a big hit the last time they appeared! -- as well as two kinds of vegetable rolls:

--Chili bean: a vegan roll with home-canned tomatoes from Adonai Acres, dried Jade beans from The Shepherd's Market, onion from Moonstruck Farm, dried red pepper, and chili spices. If the rain makes you feel chilly, this chili roll will warm you up!

--Greens-feta: back again, with spinach and arugula from Breezy Hill Farm, homegrown garlic, feta from Lucky Penny Creamery, and a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Enjoy!

At Local Roots March 16-19

It's going to be a busy weekend at Local Roots -- Artisan Day, music, and a soil testing class. On top of that, I'll have more of my Celtic-themed breads on the shelf to continue the St. Patrick's Day celebration: soda bread, Irish cheddar soda bread, and Celtic knots.

And spring is almost here! All good reasons to get out and enjoy the weekend...

Here's what I'll have on my shelves at Local Roots this week:

--Baguettes
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: blue cheese-thyme, chèvre-rosemary, and feta-oregano
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Dried tomato flatbread
--Garlic-herb bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Zaatar flatbread

In the bakery case, you'll find two varieties of vegetable rolls:

--Coconut curry is back for the third week in a row, with more of that delicious baby pac choi from Breezy Hill Farm! Still vegan, still a great flavor combination!

--Pesto chèvre is back after a brief hiatus, combining Lucky Penny Creamery chèvre with homemade pesto (from homegrown basil) and dried tomatoes. Yum!

Come and get it -- at Local Roots!

At the Market March 9-12

Next week, St. Patrick's Day will be here, and while you might not think of it as a holiday with specialty baked goods, I'm tapping my Irish roots (and heels!) and baking some Celtic-inspired treats:

Irish soda bread is a classic, but this recipe changes it up a little to make more of a tender, cakey sort of teatime treat. It includes lots of freshly milled whole wheat flour, local butter and milk and eggs, and dried currants.

Irish cheddar soda bread, on the other hand, is a little closer to the traditional soda bread -- a craggy little loaf that rises with baking powder and baking soda instead of yeast. This variation has more of that freshly milled whole wheat flour along with mmBossie cheddar cheese from Canal Junction Farmstead and dried thyme from Karen's Garden Delights.

Celtic knot bread and rolls are based on my new honey-oat-spelt bread but include a little extra butter and honey (both local) as well as shredded apples from Moreland Fruit Farm, cheddar cheese from Ohio Farm Direct, and dried thyme from Karen's Garden Delights. Look for the rolls in the bakery case and the loaves on the shelves.

(More Celtic-inspired treats later this week!)

Here's what else I'll have on my shelves at Local Roots this week:

--Baguettes
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: blue cheese-thyme, chèvre-rosemary, and feta-oregano
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Dried tomato flatbread
--Espresso chip shortbread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Zaatar flatbread

Only one kind of vegetable roll to start the week (might make another later):

--Coconut curry rolls are back, with more of that wonderful baby pac choi from Breezy Hill Farm!

That's all I have to tell you about this early in the week, but with the luck o' the Irish, there will be even more great stuff later!

At the Market March 2-5

Can you feel a breath of springtime in the air? It's been a wild and wooly sort of weather week, but life is returning, and it won't be long before I'm planting this year's garden (with the hopes of raising more of the produce I'll use in baking).

Gardening classes have begun at Local Roots Market, and the place is hopping with spring fever-type excitement. Have you stopped by lately?

Here's what I'll have on my shelves at Local Roots this week:

--Baguettes
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-dill, chèvre-rosemary, feta-oregano, and Lock 21-peppercorn
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Dried tomato flatbread
--Espresso chip shortbread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Zaatar flatbread

In the bakery case, you'll find:

--Apple spice streusel cake: A vegan coffee cake packed with freshly milled whole wheat flour (Stutzman Farms), apples (Moreland Fruit Farm), cinnamon, pecans, and shagbark hickory syrup (Simple Products). This is one of my favorite breakfast treats -- hope it becomes one of yours!

--Coconut curry vegetable rolls: Only one vegetable roll flavor this week, but it's a good one, combining pac choi and arugula from Breezy Hill Farm with onion from Moonstruck Farm, organic coconut milk, curry powder, ginger, red pepper flakes, and tamari. Completely vegan, completely delicious!

On Saturday, March 5, stop by Local Roots for my fundraiser breakfast, with all donations going toward the new restrooms at the market. I'll start with Russian buckwheat blini, a traditional food made during this "Butter Week" leading up to Ash Wednesday. When those run out, I'll switch over to scrambled French toast. Both dishes will be loaded with lots of different Local Roots products and served up with even more. Don't miss it!

Get ready for spring!
