At the Market February 23-26

More snow's coming our way -- time to bake and enjoy good bread!

This week at Local Roots:

--Baguettes
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-basil, cheddar-dill, chèvre-rosemary, and feta-oregano (possibly Lock 21-peppercorn, too)
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread

NOTE: Sesame thins will be a bit late this week as I'm temporarily out of toasted sesame oil. They'll be back by the weekend, though!

In the bakery case, you'll find one sweet treat and two flavors of vegetable rolls:

--Strawberry chèvre cookies: light, cakey cookies with Stutzman Farms golden spelt flour, Lucky Penny Creamery chèvre, Simple Products strawberry syrup, and powdered dried strawberries. Not too sweet, but just the right finish for your lunch.

--Hearty greens roll: filled with spinach and arugula from Breezy Hill Farm, homegrown garlic, dried shiitake mushrooms from Killbuck Valley, Miami Erie Canal cheese from Canal Junction Farmstead, and a splash of balsamic vinegar.

--Sweet potato mole roll: back again after its success during Chocolate Daze! Homegrown sweet potatoes and Tiger Eye beans, tomatoes from Adonai Acres, onion from Moonstruck Farm, a hit of ancho chile, and unsweetened chocolate. Non-dairy and totally delicious.

See you at the market!

At the Market February 16-19

We're catching a midwinter thaw this week, hinting at the promise of spring. But I'm still keeping warm by the oven's heat, baking away!

Here's what you'll find on my shelves at Local Roots this week:

--Baguettes (plain and garlic-herb)
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-basil, cheddar-dill, chèvre-rosemary, possibly feta-oregano, and Lock 21-peppercorn
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread

For vegetable rolls, you've got a couple of options this week:

--Pesto-chevre: homemade basil pesto mixed with creamy goat cheese from Lucky Penny Creamery makes a savory and decadent filling. Add some rehydrated dried tomatoes (from Banzhaf Garten), and you've got the taste of summer!

--Savory apple is back, with Rome and Granny Smith apples from Moreland Farms, onions from Moonstruck Farm, dried thyme from Karen's Garden Delights, and Black Swamp Gouda cheese from Canal Junction Farmstead Cheeses. A non-dairy version without the gouda will also be available.

So come and get it!

Have a Heart!

Valentine's Day is coming up fast, and if you're looking for something sweet to share with your sweetheart, stop by Local Roots Friday or Saturday for one of my hearts' delights:

--Espresso brownie hearts: fudgy and rich, with an extra drizzle of bittersweet chocolate for the die-hard chocolate lovers

--Honey cake: tempt your honey with this not-too-sweet cake loaded with spelt and buckwheat flours, buckwheat honey, and Lucky Penny Creamery chèvre

--Valentine date: if you love date bars, try this buttery rich little treat with local spelt flour, oats, butter, maple syrup, and maple sugar

--And if you are looking for something not so sweet, try an appetizer-for-two pizza on heart-shaped crusts.

Happy Valentine's Day!

At the Market February 9-12

Valentine's Day is coming up, which means that downtown Wooster's Chocolate Daze is happening this Friday and Saturday. Now, maybe you're like me and think Valentine's Day is a little overblown (because shouldn't you say "I love you" every day?), but there is always a good reason for chocolate!

Local Roots Market isn't officially participating in Chocolate Daze, but I'll be doing my best to hold up the chocolate standard. Look for some new treats this week!

--Baguettes (plain and garlic-herb)
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-basil, chèvre-rosemary, and Lock 21-peppercorn
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Mocha cinnamon rolls
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts (large and personal-size)
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Wheat rolls

I'm also planning to have a selection of small heart-shaped Valentine desserts -- details on that once I get them baked!

In the bakery case this week:

--Mocha cinnamon rolls: like regular cinnamon rolls, only not as sweet and with coffee and cocoa powder in the dough, bittersweet chocolate chips in the filling, and melted bittersweet chocolate drizzled on top
--Raspberry truffle torte: sheer decadence! Start with a dark chocolate shortbread base (infused with the flavor of black raspberries), a bit of melted bittersweet chocolate, raspberry jam, and finish with a rich brownie on top. You'll love it!
--Vegetable rolls: starting with greens-feta (with broccoli raab and spinach) Wednesday and Thursday and adding a savory kick to Chocolate Daze come Friday with sweet potato mole (homegrown sweet potatoes and Tiger Eye beans, tomatoes, onions, garlic, Southwestern spices, and unsweetened chocolate).

More sweet surprises to come!

At the Market February 2-5

Crazy weather this week! But it's ideal baking weather, and I will definitely have some fresh bread for you at Local Roots, starting later this morning:

--Baguettes (plain and garlic-herb)
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-dill, chèvre-rosemary, and feta-oregano
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Espresso chip shortbread
--Homestyle rye bread

--Honey spelt oat bread (I know, it's not "new" any more, but I finally took a photo)
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts (large and personal-size)
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Zaatar flatbread

Vegetable rolls this week will be:

--Spicy Thai pac choi -- Breezy Hill brought the last (for now!) of their pac choi to market last week, so I thought I'd give this favorite an unprecedented third week in a row. Enjoy it now because it might be a while until you see it again!

--Sweet potato chili -- homegrown sweet potatoes, steamed and mashed, combine with cooked Jade beans from The Shepherd's Market, dried red pepper, onions and garlic sauteed with chili powder and cumin, and shredded Cheddar cheese from Ohio Farm Direct.

Stay warm and safe in this week's treacherous weather!
