At Wooster Natural Foods May 18-21

It's getting a little easier for me to drop off bread at Wooster Natural Foods on Wednesdays so that you have an extra day to stop in and get good, fresh, locally-made bread with local ingredients. Here's what I'll have there this week:

--Garlic-herb bread
--Honey oat spelt bread
--Pain aux noix (French walnut bread)
--Rye bread

Enjoy!

At Local Roots May 18-21

Thanks to everyone who turned out for Herb Day at Local Roots last Saturday! I had a great time in the demo kitchen, making herb butter and cheese to spread on my breads, radish sandwiches with same, herb salt and vinegars, a very tasty herb salad for lunch, and lavender sauteed apples for dessert. Fun!

This week, the rain and cooler weather is keeping me out of the garden and in the kitchen, baking away. That's good news for my loyal customers!

Here's what you'll find on my shelves at Local Roots Market this week:

--Baguettes and boules (part whole wheat)
--Basil pesto flatbread
--Cheese crackers (both cheddar and pepper jack)
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-chive, chèvre-rosemary, and gouda-sage
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Garlic-herb bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Light rye bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sandwich buns
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Tea rings (some with pecans)
--Whole wheat pita
--Zaatar flatbread

In the bakery case, you'll find:

--Asparagus-chèvre rolls: Back again for week 2! Asparagus season is in full swing here, and this roll showcases the excellent asparagus from Autumn Harvest Organic Farm, roasted with garlic scallions from Karen's Garden Delights and sunflower oil from Sunsations. Then I added chopped walnuts and a hearty helping of creamy goat cheese from Lucky Penny Creamery. The best of spring!

--Chard-cheddar rolls: I've decided that I really love adding chard to my grilled cheese sandwiches, and this takes that idea one step further. Chard from Karen's Garden Delights is sauteed with her garlic chives, then I add shredded cheddar from Ohio Farm Direct for a savory sandwich roll.

So come and get 'em!

At Local Roots May 11-14

It's May! It's getting warmer, and it's time to get the garden planted so that I can use homegrown vegetables and herbs in breads and rolls later this year.

But most of all, it's time for... bread!

Here's what you'll find on my shelves at Local Roots Market this week:

--Baguettes and boules (part whole wheat)
--Basil pesto flatbread
--Cheese crackers (both cheddar and pepper jack)
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-dill, cheddar-green garlic, chèvre-rosemary, and gouda-sage
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Garlic-herb bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sandwich buns
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Tea rings (some with pecans)
--Whole wheat pita
--Zaatar flatbread

In the bakery case, you'll find:

--Asian carrot salad rolls: vegetable roll flavor #1 takes one of my favorite raw vegetable salads and rolls it up in crusty artisan dough: shredded carrots from Breezy Hill Farm, green onion from The Shepherd's Market, cilantro from Crestwood Farms, and a tangy Asian-style dressing with a little kick.

--Asparagus-chèvre rolls: Asparagus season is in full swing here, and this roll showcases the excellent asparagus from Autumn Harvest Organic Farm, roasted with garlic scallions from Karen's Garden Delights, sunflower oil from Sunsations, and balsamic vinegar. Then I added chopped walnuts and a hearty helping of creamy goat cheese from Lucky Penny Creamery. The best of spring!

--Blueberry-lavender cake, a tender whole wheat cake with blueberries (from last year) from Moreland Fruit Farms, unsalted butter from Hartzler Family Dairy, eggs from The YardFarmers, and homegrown lavender.

This Saturday is Herb Day at the market (hence the lavender in the cake!), and I will be in the demo kitchen, making herb salts, herb vinegar, herb butters, herb cheeses, herb salads, and more! Stop by and learn how to enjoy your favorite herbs in new ways!

Tortilla Testing

Every now and then, I like to test new recipes to see if they'd be worth adding to my market repertoire. I've been wanting to try making whole wheat tortillas for some time now, despite the lack of a tortilla press, and I finally had time this afternoon.

The initial results indicate that more work is needed. They smell and taste great, but I just haven't been able to roll them out into reasonably good circles AND transfer the tortillas to the pan without stretching, poking, or folding the dough. So I need to work on it some more.

But keep your fingers crossed!

At Wooster Natural Foods May 4-7

I managed to get bread made for Wooster Natural Foods a little early this week, so I'll drop it off before closing today. That gives you three full business days to stop in and buy:

--Garlic-herb bread
--Honey oat spelt bread
--Pain aux noix (French walnut bread)
--Spelt bread

So enjoy!

At Local Roots May 4-7

It's May! I know, it's still a little chilly out, but the world is definitely greening up -- and a new growing season is on the way!

Here's what you'll find on my shelves at Local Roots Market this week:

--Baguettes and boules (part whole wheat)
--Basil pesto flatbread
--Cheese crackers (both cheddar and pepper jack)
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-dill, cheddar-green garlic, chèvre-rosemary, feta-oregano, and Lock 21-peppercorn
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Garlic-herb bread
--Homestyle rye bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pizza crusts
--Pumpernickel bread
--Sandwich buns
--Sesame thins
--Spelt bread
--Tea rings (some with pecans)
--Zaatar flatbread

In the bakery case, you have two options (so far!) for vegetable rolls:

--Coconut curry rolls are back Wednesday only, with Asian greens from Por-Bar Farms, spinach from Adonai Acres, pac choi from Banzhaf Garten Organic Farm, green onions from The Shepherd's Market, and sunflower oil from Sunsations. (Vegan)

--Spinach feta rolls, a perennial favorite, return, with a spinach mix from Por-Bar Farms, garlic from Karen's Garden Delights, feta cheese from Lucky Penny Creamery, and a splash of balsamic vinegar.

Also in the bakery case, espresso chip shortbread is back! Local wheat and buckwheat flour provide the grainy texture of this very buttery, chocolate- and coffee-laced treat that's not too sweet.

And Happy Mother's Day to you all!
