At Wooster Natural Foods June 15-18

Coming to Wooster Natural Foods this afternoon:

--Garlic herb bread
--Pain aux noix (French walnut bread)
--Rosemary bread

Enjoy!

At Local Roots June 15-18

Summer's almost here again, so it's time for the return of two of my favorite crops: lavender and garlic. As I've been able to start harvesting, I've been able to replenish supplies of the Lavender Lemonade (with additional lavender coming from the generous folks at Hillside Gardens). And now that it's time to cut garlic scapes, it's also time to make garlic scape pesto -- and to start offering garlic pesto flatbread at the market.

In addition, I've come up with a slightly softer version of the sandwich bun dough and am trying out buns for hot dogs or bratwurst. They're substantial and come four to a package, just like the many sausages and brats we have in the market freezers.

Good times! So here's what you'll find on my shelves at Local Roots Market this week:

--Baguettes and boules (part whole wheat)
--Basil pesto flatbread
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: cheddar-dill, chèvre-rosemary, Miami Erie Canal (Swiss-style) and parsley
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Garlic-herb bread
--Garlic pesto flatbread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Hot dog/brat buns
--Light rye bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pita chips
--Pizza crusts
--Sandwich buns
--Sesame thins
--Shortcakes
--Spelt bread
--Tea rings
--Whole wheat pita
--Zaatar flatbread

In the bakery case, you can find two kinds of vegetable rolls:

--Chard-cheddar, with chard from Boii Gardens, garlic scapes from my own garden, parsley from Karen's Garden Delights, and cheddar from Meadow Maid.

--Spicy peanut carrot, combining my favorite Thai-style peanut sauce (made with Sherry's Classic Cuisine peanut butter) with shredded carrots from Adonai Acres. This non-dairy roll puts a new twist on peanut butter sandwiches!

So come and eat!

At Local Roots June 8-11

Now that summer's here, it's time for a quick reminder: Grain Maker breads contain no preservatives. That means if you keep bread out on the counter in the hot weather, you will likely get mold on it very quickly. Since I want you to be able to enjoy every last grain of bread, I strongly encourage you to store Grain Maker breads in the refrigerator, then reheat or toast it as you eat it. Sandwich loaves should keep up to two weeks; artisan loaves, one week.

The forecast for heat today means that I was up VERY early to start baking so that you can get bread as fresh from the oven as possible. Here's what you'll find on my shelves at Local Roots Market this week:

--Baguettes and boules (part whole wheat)
--Basil pesto flatbread
--Cheese-herb artisan bread: chèvre-rosemary, Miami Erie Canal (Swiss-style) and parsley, and possibly gouda with sage
--Cinnamon-pecan bread
--Garlic-herb bread
--Honey spelt oat bread
--Light rye bread
--Maple oatmeal bread
--Pain aux noix
--Pita chips
--Pizza crusts
--Sandwich buns
--Sesame thins
--Shortcakes
--Spelt bread
--Tea rings
--Whole wheat pita
--Zaatar flatbread

If you're wondering, pumpernickel bread is currently out of the baking rotation. If I get enough people clamoring for it, I will try to bring it back occasionally, but until fall, I don't plan to make it weekly.

In the bakery case this week:

--Chili-chard rolls are back, ever so briefly -- same as last week, with Adonai Acres tomatoes and green onions, Karen's Garden Delights chard, and Blue Jacket Dairy's Firelands (chipotle) cheddar curds

--Spinach-cheddar rolls: with spinach from Hillside Gardens, cheddar from Ohio Farm Direct/Meadow Maid, and garlic chives from Karen's Garden Delights -- simple but savory!

Enjoy -- and keep cool!

Waiting for the Harvest

As of this morning, all of the Lavender Lemonade has sold out at Local Roots, and I am currently unable to restock. Why? I've used all of last year's lavender from the garden, and this year's lavender is just now budding, so it will be a couple of weeks before I have any picked and dried and ready.

I will check with a couple of other Local Roots producers to see if they have any yet, so please be patient with me while I try to replenish what has become a very popular tisane blend!

Other tisane blends are restocked, but some of those herbs (such as anise hyssop) are in short supply at the moment, too. I am busily picking and drying mints and lemon balm and other goodies as they grow, but summer's not even here yet -- and there's more to come!

Thanks for your patience -- and for your support!
